1. Motion Lab New + Reduced Hours

   I would like to discuss the idea of re-implementing the 8-11 hours for the motion lab below spruce

   It seems a common sentiment that the current athletic facilities are often at capacity (Which is something I have personally seen myself)

   However, one thing being done about it was the opening of the motion lab to offer more space to exercise and work out

   However, with the change to the hours of motion lab, the problem has been made worse for the period of time in which many students (including myself) like to work out

   I will however, acknowledge that I come into this with a lack of information as to why the hours were reduced to begin with.

   If anybody could clarify as to why the change occurred, (I.E. basically nobody worked out after 8PM) that would go a long way

   It is more than a little discouraging as someone trying to get in better shape when I show up to the Rec center and see that there are already 2-3 people rotating on most of the equipment by the time I get there

2. More cameras

   If Golden is known for having such a high theft problem then why in god's name isn't their more cameras on Campus where there are bike racks. I had my bike stolen last week and it's probably long gone and since their aren't any cameras so theirs no way of catching the ******* that stole it. Seriously it's ******* ridiculous that I pay $60,000 for tuition and y'all can't hire someone to install some more ******* cameras.

   With as much money as Mines takes in, they should consider building another recreation center with a massive weight room. The recreation center is too small and doesn't have enough space. It should also be open 24/7. Also the parking at mines needs to be improved. Consider building CTLM lots vertically into parking garages and making more parking available to students and visitors.

4. Mines Market forcing students to use munch money over Thanksgiving break

   Can Mines please not force the people not traveling during Thanksgiving break and wishing to get food from Mines Market to use munch money? This should be meal exchanges, not munch money.

5. Computers around campus

   I've noticed that there are multiple computers facing service issues. Literally before my lab on tuesday I have to restart computers in marquez due to not being connected to the network. In the library there are multiple computers that people avoid due to there being problems of connectivity, either it doesnt connect with the display or the accesories (keyboard, mouse) do not work.

6. Coors Breakout 281 is always very hot.

   The breakout rooms in the south corner of the Coors building are always extremely hot, even in the winter, with the heaters by the windows always running. I believe that the thermostat defaults to something around 80 degrees, and often times manually setting the thermostat to something reasonable gets canceled after a few minutes. Is it possible for this to be fixed?

8. Charge for electricity instead of time at the EV stations

   Right now all of the EV chargers on campus cost $1 per hour regardless of how much electricity is consumed. This is a complete ripoff because the actual cost of electricity is only $0.10-$0.15 cents per kWh.

   For example, the battery in my PHEV has a 10kWh capacity, and it charges at 3.3 kW per hour, so if the stations billed by kWh, that would come to $0.50 per hour for a total of $1.50 for the 3 hours needed to fully recharge. But under the current system of $1/hour, the cost is double what it should be: in my case $3 instead of $1.50, if your car charges slower it’s closer to $4.

   It’s no surprise why the stations are always empty. $4 per day ($20+ per week is a ripoff and makes it much cheaper to just buy gas). Since our school is environmentally focused, we should support electric driving for everyone instead of making it a privilege for those with enough money.

   Also, it’s worth noting that ALL the stations used to be free last fall but the school ripped them out in 2022 and replaced them with the paid chargers. They claimed it was an “upgrade” but functionality-wise the new chargers are no better, the “upgrade” was just a way of making them paid. We need to find middle ground...

9. Computers in Arthur lakes need to be fixed

   There are multiple computers down at the library, I've counted 4 and there are many students that come to use computers here only to be turned away due to the ones that seem to be available are the ones that are down. This needs to be fixed as there will be more orediggers in the library once midterms get in full swing

10. Registration sucks

    The registration people are probably the most frustrating rudest people ever. I sent out 2 emails regarding problems with registering for classes for spring semester, and my first email had a read receipt so when I went to to check my emails I saw that they had opened it but decided to ignore, I sent them a 2nd email and once again totally ignored. I'm a freshman at this school I'm already busting my *** trying to get good grades I don't need this stress, if they're gonna treat us unfairly then they shouldn't have that job as registration. It is their job to fix my problem not mine, I've already done my part, they need to fix it because this is their problem.

11. Clean the SRC Gym Floors!

    The gym floors are so dirty it doesn't matter if you wear nice gym shoes, you won't get any traction and you'll just have to clean your shoes every time you use the gym. My idea is pretty simple: SRC employees stay for an hour after close (once or twice a week) and sweep and mop the gym floors. The SRC at Mines has the cost of a nice gym, but delivers the quality and service of a shoddy gym at a large middle school. Half of the SRC employees are being paid to watch tv behind the desk, or do homework. Meanwhile, the volleyballs and basketballs are flat, they close down so early, and the floors are always extremely dirty. The upstairs gym is packed full, and students planning on playing basketball, badminton, volleyball, or indoor soccer frequently drive to the school and have to turn back to go home because there is no room. Meanwhile, the downstairs gym is completely empty, but employees won't allow us to use it because "they don't want to deal with it." How is our money being spent and who is hiring these employees? If the fee wasn't mandatory this gym wouldn't be worth the rate. Because the fees are mandatory, there needs to be some form of accountability for the gym's management. I understand if the management doesn't think it's worth it to stay open 24 hours. They're probably right. It's not economical for any gym to be open 24 hours; the reason many gyms do it is because it's a selling point. The CSM gym doesn't have to worry about sales because their customers have no choice but to pay. At any rate, the least they can do is clean the gym floors weekly. It takes less than an hour ($12.56 a week at minimum wage), it costs next to nothing in supplies, and the employees are already being paid to sit there.

    Thank you for your beef Ethan! This has quickly become an important issue among students. I have contacted the recreation center to address the cleanliness and safety issues with the gym. Regarding being overcrowded, administration is taking steps to curve the issue with Spruce and Jackson having gyms. Additionally there are future plans to create more indoor recreation space open to all students.

12. Expand Available On-Campus Therapy

    Mines talks a lot about how in favor it is of supporting mental health, but a lot of the resources seem to be more fluff than genuinely beneficial. Wellness workshops and 10 minutes in health office hours aren't providing what hurting students need- therapy should be more widely and quickly available for students on campus. Even getting referred to long-term therapy off campus takes months, and follow up is very limited. That's a big problem for people who need someone to talk to.

13. SRC gym space, sanitation, and safety issues

    I know this idea has been presented numerous times in the past three or so years, but the SRC gym appears to be far too small for the number of students at our school. I understand there was the recent gym addition in the new Spruce dorm, but the space seems relatively small compared to the immense growth of our student population. Given that the space issue cannot be fixed immediately, I am curious to know what plan the administration has in place to address the issue.

    In addition to the space concern, I feel that more effort should be placed into keeping the gym clean and safe, especially if the current SRC gym will remain the only primary gym in the coming years. As I've become more familiar with the gym, I've noticed bands on machines wearing away, covering the ground and the machines themselves with tiny black rubber particles. The bands on some machines are noticeably thinner as a result. While I'm no expert with machine equipment, this doesn't seem very safe to me. Regarding sanitation, the gym doesn't feel particularly clean. As mentioned in a post from earlier this semester, the floors seem dirty, and there is a terrible smell emanating from the dumbbell rack area, as if something is rotting behind the rack. These problems should be addressed before someone gets hurt.

    The gym is the place on campus I go each day to decompress and have fun. It soils the experience when it is extremely crowded and isn't properly maintained.

    Thank you for your beef! Administration has certainly realized the gym has become undersized. As you mentioned, this is why Spruce and Jackson have gyms. There are also plans to add another gym to campus. With regards to the cleanliness and safety, I'll reach out to the rec center to fix these issues.

15. Club sports needs work

    I do not believe club sports has enough administrative resources to meet the needs of all the club sports teams. It is extremely hard to get anything done for your team. We are limited in fundraising, and now maybe even the number of players, and which season we can participate in. Club sports should encourage more people to play and multi semester seasons. If more people participate then clubs can acquire more funds through dues and potentially decrease the price for each player. Clubs should be allowed to have as many participants as they desire.

    Additionally it is unfair when one team breaks the rules and other unrelated teams are forced to suffer the consequences. The club sports environment is not what it should be. Unfortunately, club sports administration has a negative reputation from the students as they make us jump through hoops to get anything done. It would be nice to find a way to repair this relationship and have the students/administration feel like we are working towards a common goal of having a fun, stress-free, club sports team.

16. Mines should provide access to Tampons and Pads in all bathrooms

    Colorado School of Mines should have access to tampons and pads in all bathrooms. Currently, the Vanguard Scholars are sponsoring tampons and pads in the bathroom, however, making sure students have period supplies should not fall on a student group. Even if the tampons and pad dispensers "are not used enough" it should not be on student organizations to supply tampons. In the bathrooms where there are no tampons and pads provided by the vanguard scholars, there are signs that recommend walking to the Ben Parker student center in order to get supplies. This must have been written by someone who does not experience periods because even walking across the street will drench students' pants in period blood if their flow is heavy, especially if it is a surprise period or at the beginning of the period. Since Mines clearly does not believe tampons and pads are a necessity as shown by their lack of providing accessible period supplies, a "free bleed month" should be started in order to raise awareness. Students that get periods that feel comfortable with it should free bleed during the school day and go about their day. This would go in line with Mines' policy of tampons and pads not being a necessity. With the free bleed, the administration can physically see the effects of not providing tampons and pads to students and that it is a public health issue. It's despicable that Mines decided to not fill tampon and pad machines and instead put the responsibility of students' health and safety onto a student organization instead of taking ownership once they discontinued the sanitary product machines. Even at a school with only 30% women, women still should be heard and supported, especially with sanitary product access. Free bleeding will show the necessity of period product access unless the school would like blood on their chairs. Additionally, a pad expires after three years and tampons don't expire for five years so the "justification" of not servicing sanitary product machines sounds more like a bad excuse. If this is truly the reason then put fewer tampons and pads in the dispenser and let people have access to tampons and pads.

    There's a display near the couches outside of Periodic Table. It used to be a nice place to sit but now it's not because of the annoying noise the new display makes. This petition is to remove the display (or at least keep it muted).

    This semester in specific, there have been multiple instances of clear, 50 degree, sunny days, followed by massive 4-8 inch snow storms. Many of these days the roads have been unsafe, even for the most experienced winter drivers, with snow tires and 4-wheel drive, let alone students not experienced with driving in the snow and students who do not own vehicles well-equipped for the snow. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that 100% remote or online learning, while obviously not desirable, is still entirely possible. This thread is not necessarily asking for more snow days, or the opportunity to miss more class time, simply the acknowledgement of students safety and the viability of remote learning.

19. Mines Car Theft Problem

    I am sick and tired of seeing Timely Warning: Motor Vehicle Theft in my inbox. MPD needs to develop a plan on how they plan to tackle the increasing number of car thefts that have occurred on campus. And no, telling me "This motor vehicle theft is consistent with a notable increase in vehicle crimes across the Denver Metropolitan area" does not cut it.

    I have concerns that my car may be stolen/broken into if I do not park as close as possible to campus buildings and I no longer feel safe leaving campus later at night as I worry my car might be stolen in later hours. These risks are even greater for students parking in the lots on 19th due to their direct access to 6th Ave. I have spoken to students who have alleged that the security cameras in 1750 Jackson have not been turned on despite the fact that there have been multiped thefts and burglaries in their garages. Even McNeil, where MPD is located, has been targeted.

    What does Mines Police plan to do to help deter thefts on campus? There have been no statements made regarding how Mines PD wants to decrease the number of car related crimes on campus nor does it seem they plan on making one. We have put a "kick me" sign on our back letting criminals know that we are an easy target for thefts. Since Mines PD has not released a plan, here's some possible ways to make it harder for thieves to take from our campus:

    1: Increase the number of cameras in all existing parking lots
    2: Hire more staff to help monitor security cameras and altering of suspicious activity
    3: Install more lighting within lots.
    4: Signage reminding students/facility/staff to lock their doors and take valuables as well as signage alerting to the use of cameras
    5: Increase patrols within lots prone to theft. (ex: Lots closest to 19th and Mines Park)

    I recognize that all of this takes time and money and it doesn't guarantee thefts will stop, but there at least needs to be an open communication between the police and campus on how they want to tackle the problem.

    I am sick and tired of seeing Timely Warning: Motor Vehicle Theft in my inbox. MPD needs to develop a plan on how they plan to tackle the increasing number of car thefts that have occurred on campus. And no, telling me "This motor vehicle theft is consistent with a notable increase in vehicle crimes across the Denver Metropolitan area" does not cut it.

    I have concerns that my car may be stolen/broken into if I do not park as close as possible to campus buildings and I no longer feel safe leaving campus later at night as I worry… more

20. Expand limited pronoun options on Canvas

    Canvas has pronouns options. Great! However, they are extremely limited. The options available are: "ze/zir, hir/zirs, hirs;" "they/them/theirs;" "he/him/his;" and "she/her/hers." There are no other options.

    This is not very good. Furthermore, this has been decided by Mines at some point; the defaults Canvas has without the list being modified is "she/her," "he/him," and "they/them" [1].

    Why is this an issue? There are two major reasons. First, it does not allow for mixed pronouns. The Trevor Project's national survey shows that "nearly two-thirds of LGBTQ youth who use pronouns outside of the binary opt to use combinations of he/him, she/her, and they/them" [2]. For example, one might use "she/they." For there to be no options for this is very limiting to those that do not use strictly binary pronouns.

    The second reason this is a problem is that it is unnecessarily restrictive. I understand that Canvas only allows pronouns to be chosen from a set list to prevent vulgarity or the disaster of moderating user's pronouns, but there are two very simple improvements that could be made (in addition to mixed pronouns). First, there needs to be an "other" option. Currently, if one does not fit into the four options Canvas allows (also note that only one in four people who use neopronouns use "ze/zir" [2]), they must either use inaccurate pronouns or not set their pronouns. Not setting pronouns leads to gendering largely from their name in Canvas discussions and the like, which is problematic. The second simple improvement would be to add an "any/all" option. Many genderqueer, nonbinary, and genderfluid people use "any/all."

    In essence, the pronouns list needs at least the following five options added:
    - "he/they"
    - "she/they"
    - "he/she"
    - "any/all"
    - "other"

    Ideally, each of the mixed pronouns would also have both orders (it generally denotes preference), though that might cause too much clutter. In any case, this is a bare minimum for inclusive pronoun options in Canvas.
