Undergraduates Not Allowed Take-Home Exams
We have all probably been told by our Professors that they are not allowed to administers take-home exams to undergraduate students. The complete wording is as follows: "Final exams for undergrads should not be take-homes where they have a week to take it. Instructors should stick to their allotted 2 hours and should administer during or close to their scheduled times. We don’t want students to have multiple take homes where faculty expect them to spend 10+ hours on each." Never have I had an exam that has taken me 10+ hours, if anything these take homes take 1 hour or at most maybe 2.5 hours. These exams are usually more applicable to real world application and are a lot less stressful than a 2 hour time crunch. If there is true concern for the length of take homes or the preference of students I feel that students should have had a choice in this decision or that instead of our right disallowing take-home exams students should be given a choice by the professors. Some students may perform better with a 2 hour time slot and that is less stressful for them and others such as myself perform better with a take home working a realistic problem with realistic resources. This decision should either be revoked or altered to students should be given the opportunity for either a take-home or a 2 hour time slot exam.

A few of our senators had issues that were directly what you referenced in your comment (8+ hours and multiple in a weekend). So with the negative experiences stemming from our senators, faculty chose to make a policy against take home exams.
Our senate meetings, including those in which administration attended, are open to the public. They are Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm. With thanksgiving break being this week, we will not be having senate this week, but will resume next week. You can find the zoom link on our website: usg.mines.edu
