Mental Health on Mines Campus (Junior)
Mental health is not valued as much as it shoulf be on campus. I have dealt with faculty/staff who have told those with mental illness to not talk to people about it because "it is disturbing". Active Minds at Mines and the counseling center are trying to help students with mental health and dealing with mental illness. What we lack is an openness on campus about how much mental illnesses affect people on campus. We need to teach faculty, staff and RAs how to talk to those with mental illness. They shouldn't be telling people just try to be happy that's not helpful. Training or educating people about talking with people with mental illness will greatly improve those people's outlook. They can feel more listened to or feel ashamed of their illness when the more of campus understands what they live with not just the counseling center. I feel this is the biggest issue Mines has that they don't talk about.
