Mines is NOT ADA accessible
I broke my foot last week and getting around campus has been hell. I have heard Maple Hall is welcoming a couple ADA residents next semester, and I worry for their safety and ability to get around campus. For one, the automatic door buttons for the front entrance of Alderson don’t work, and many other doors simply don’t have them. I have to wait for somebody kind enough to hold the door open or risk injuring myself further. I’ve just heard the elevator in the student center will be shut down over spring break, so if I want to eat at PT, I have to crutch up the hill to the top. Going from Maple to CTLM means either risking going down the stairs, or having to go all the way around Alderson, doubling my trip. If you’ve ever been on crutches you know how tiring they are, and from the small taste I have had of needing a little more accessibility, I am appalled at the lack of it present at Mines.
Thank you for pointing out these issues to us! We have begun contacting administration to address the lack of accessibility and to see what they are doing to fix automatic doors that are not working. Would a focus group to identify the specific needs and areas lacking be of interest to you? That may be a next step to identify areas on campus lacking in accessibility. Please contact us at minesusg@gmail.com if you would be interested in taking part in this discussion!

Not to mention the fact that if you have a class in Chauvenet, you will find no elevators! Hope you can hop with a broken foot (which is what I did sadly). When I went into the disability office, she offered me more testing time.... Do you think more testing time would fix my broken ankle?
I would feel so bad for someone who couldn't even walk on one leg for that sake!
Too bad USG won't even do anything about it either; just something to put on their resume!

Mines should feel welcoming to those with disabilities and give them the LEGALLY REQUIRED accessability features. However, this is not the case. From broken door-opening buttons to elevators that are broken for days on end to the lack of wheelchair ramps, Mines has made it very challenging for those with disabilities to get to class and and is very unwelcoming. I fear for the safety of those with disabilities when they are forced to go down ice-covered stairs on crutches or can’t open a door without risking further injury. Mines CAN and SHOULD DO BETTER. This is not a topic of debate. This is the law required by the Americans With Disabilities Act. Do better Mines.

I realize this isn’t a specific idea, but something must be done to ensure all students have adequate accessibility on campus
