Mines Needs to Improve Commuter Parking
I know I'm not the only person to complain about parking at mines, but it is absolutely a joke. This morning I pulled into the A/AA parking lot with what I thought was plenty of time to find a spot and walk to class. However, I circled the entire lot with several cars behind me and I could not find a single spot. I drove to the other commuter lot, and over to the football field to try and find parking and I couldn't find anything.I eventually jut gave up and parked in downtown Golden. It's ridiculous to charge students $100 for a parking permit, with only a chance of them finding a spot in a decreasing number of commuter lots. Additionally, the general lots mostly seem to have spots, but the permits are nearly $300. This is unfair to students who can't afford to pay that extra $200, students who would rather not pay that extra money (you shouldn't be forced to), as well as students who don't live local. But for those who would like to pay the extra money, apparently the wait-list is hundreds long. We all know Golden is too expensive for most students to live in, and as a result Mines relies on commuter students. Essentially it feels like Mines is saying unless you're a very lucky commuter, you can afford to live in Golden, or you fork up the $300, you don't then good luck getting to class ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

Might I also bring attention to the fact that Mines is building 2 new residence halls in one year. One of which will be taking out an existing parking lot (the lot by the welcome center). A quote from the article below '"We know the farther away students live from campus, the more challenging it is for them to access resources, be an active part of the community and ultimately be successful," said Daniel Fox, vice president of student life at Mines'. What really makes it challenging for students to have access to resources is all of the students who don't live on campus who can not even get on campus due to parking issues! How absurd that this is not being addressed, and even made worse by building more residence halls!! And the hypocrisy of our administration in addressing making the students happy, but only catering to growing our population... not making the current population happy. How about you temporarily make that residence hall a parking lot until the parking structure is built? What do they plan to do until the parking structure is completed in 2020 and they continue to increase enrollment each year? Since freshman are given priority of the residence halls anyway... this doesn't help upperclassmen and graduate students!
And even worse.... THEY ARE PUTTING CLASSROOMS IN THE PARKING STRUCTURE! Why waste parking space with classrooms when the problem is a LACK OF PARKING.
Students aren't going to want to come to this great university any more because of all the bad comments they hear... and if they keep treating us poorly we are going to go elsewhere. High stress levels are a problem at this university... and it doesn't help when the stress is being piled on by not being able to get to class or always being late due not be able to park.
