  1. The SRC Hours

Physical wellness is extremely important for students for academic and emotional success. Most students have classes all day and need to de-stress after finishing their homework late at night. With the SRC closing so early, many have to resort to running around the streets at late hours such as 12am which can be extremely hazardous. So, could the SRC hours be changed to as late as the library hours (2am) or even 24hrs during the week? Certain areas, such as rock climbing or the pool which may be viewed as needing an SRC worker to be there could be closed…

We understand and agree that physical wellness is very important for student success here at Mines. This is one of the reasons we offer students the chances to take specialized PA classes. We have one of our representative classes looking over this suggestion so stay tuned for updates. Please note however that later SRC hours could result in higher student fees as well as later shifts for our own working students.

    • Stop letting other departments reserve the Mining computer lab!

We didn't have a computer lab with mining software all last semester (I want my technology fee refunded) and now with a new computer lab the Registrar allows non-mining classes to reserve the lab. We routinely get kicked out by EPICS, MechE, and other classes and THIS IS THE ONLY LAB WITH THE MINING SOFTWARE THAT WE NEED! Stop letting other classes reserve our lab. It is especially frustrating when a mechanical class uses our lab and their lab upstairs is available.

The process has been started to resolve this issue. Please leave more comments about this problem so USG can bring them to administration and implement a permanent solution.

        -USG

        UPDATE:
USG had a meeting with members from the registrar, the mining department, and the college. The solution was determined to reserve blocks of time where students can use the room for studying and homework. You can decide the times that work best for you here: http://when2meet.com/?5853872-z7t6i

      • The Registrar Office Permanent Staff are very Rude to Students

When students go to speak about their class schedules, graduation requirements, or transfer details, the registrar's permanent staff are rude. The email communications from the staff are short, uninformative, unorganized, etc., and when a student asks for clarification, the response is unnecessarily hostile and still unhelpful.

Direct communications are no better. However, if you complain or ask to speak to anyone who is higher in rank, you find out that their mother is their direct boss, and therefore your complaint falls on deaf ears.

If the registrar does not wish to interact with students, my suggestion is to go completely…

          UPDATE:
USG recently met with the registrar’s office. They are continuing to address this concern in new ways besides the survey. If you disagree or agree please let us know down in the comments or by visiting USG office hours.

          Love,
          USG
          ___________________________________

After the joint focus group between USG, students, and the registrar, we have come up with some solutions:
          1) The registrar is developing a survey that will be sent to all students who come into the office for assistance in order to get feedback on whether they completed their job effectively and to the satisfaction of students.
          2) The registrar has had two vacant positions recently, putting them slightly behind in processing.  Both of these positions should be filled by the end of the month so that they can better address students’ needs.

This is an ongoing process so please continue to leave comments…

        • Access to E-mail After Graduation

It would be nice if we could have access to our Mines e-mail addresses even after we graduate. Other universities allow their students to use their e-mail addresses indefinitely and this will help graduates keep social, academic, and career ties.

            Hello!

We’ve been talking with the CIO about this and it looks promising! We will keep you posted on our progress!

            UPDATE:

This is a big topic and CCIT knows students want this. Last year there was not enough time to make the change but this year CCIT is starting earlier so current seniors can have this for when they graduate. USG can not promise this will happen this year but working with CCIT we hope it does.

          • Meal Exchanges Should be Reinstated

I noticed after not having a meal plan last semester that subway, as well as the Periodic Table no longer do meal exchanges unless you have the agate plan I believe, and that only gives you 5. Is this a way to force us to eat at Mines Market everyday? That makes me angry as I think it is important to provide more variety in our meals. Also this could have been made up for with an increase in munch money but it was not. So what's the deal?

USG has engaged in a conversation with Sodexo about the meal exchanges. We are looking into the contract with them to see if we are able to bring them back. We will keep you updated as we work on this.

You can also attend the Food Committee Meeting on Friday at 12pm in Mines Market to voice this concern.

              UPDATE

USG has been able to extend hours at Mines Market, but not yet bring back meal exchanges. Thant is something we will continue to work toward for next school year.

            • Non-Varsity Use of the McKee Weightroom in Volk Gymnasium

As it stands currently, the McKee Weight room is allowed only to Varsity athletes, but I feel that due to the amount of fees that each individual student is paying the McKee weight room should be open to reservation by student organizations. As it stands right now the Rec Center is always packed, and a group of students who wish to lift together are completely out of luck when it comes to using the free weights/bars if they want to and being able to get out of the gym in under 2 hours.

              My proposal is as follows:
              Allow students…

Thank you for voicing your opinion on this matter. We agree that the SRC has had a large increase in usage to correspond with an increased enrollment at Mines. This in turn has overcrowded the Rec. gym at peak hours. Allowing club sports, ROTC, and other student groups to use the McKee weight room would decrease the strain on the SRC.
Last semester your Junior class representatives began working on a solution to this issue and come up with a similar idea to the one posted. There are a handful of problems that must be addressed for this to happen. Scheduling around Varsity sports, supervision of users, implementation of a portal, and administrative approval are few.
Unfortunately, these problems take time to overcome. In the short-term we will contact the SRC staff to see about maximizing the usable space in the gym and increasing students access to workout…

              • AP/IB classes should count HASS/LAIS/EBGN elective credit

I do not understand why liberal arts AP/IB tests only count as free elective credits. There are so many HASS/EBGN elective credit hours required to graduate, and many AP/IB classes are parallel to the liberal arts electives provided here. Why wouldn't a 4 or a 5 on AP (or a 5-7 on IB) tests for classes like the following count?

                ~ English Literature and Composition
                ~ English Language and Composition
~ Macroeconomics (yes, this can count for EBGN 201, but only if you have received a 4 or a 5 on both this and Microeconomics)
                ~ Microeconomics (see above)
                ~…

                • The gym is almost always full.

For the gym, it is almost always full. I know that the school is expanding... ie. Elm Hall was built for a reason. Also, I understand that students can work out at any time, but even at low density hours, the gym is quite busy. Trust me, I have been to the gym during all of its hours during the school year. I would recommend building *gasp* another building or supplementing students with alternative places to work out.

                  • We should give less money to the athletic department and more money to departments that need more faculty or more funding for research

So doing research on this, I could not find an itemized expenditure sheet as for what this institution pays for certain departments (which raises another issue that the institution should be more open about how they are handling our money). If I am wrong in what I am saying, then please attach an itemized expenditures sheet to this post proving such and I will be on my way including the means that this department makes revenue off of. With that being said, I am assuming that Mines pays a lot of money for our athletic department because of 1) Travel…

                    • Parking at Mines

I think that the changes made to parking at Mines have royally disordered the already broken parking system. Making the lowest CTLM lot a commuter was one of the most ridiculous things parking services could have done. I pay close to $100 dollars more for a General Permit and it gives me the ability to park 20 foot closer than a lucky commuter? And thats only on a good day when I can even find a place to park ANYWHERE. Now they tried to make things right by adding a general lot by the ROTC building by Q lot. Sweet…

This is something USG has been working on over the past few years. In the school’s 5 year plan they’re planning to construct a parking garage that would bring around 700 new spots. This is a project will take multiple years to complete and the recent price increases are going towards the construction of this parking garage. Feel free to comment below with anymore questions or concerns, come in to our Senate meetings, or come to our office hours!
                        Sincerely USG!

                      • Getting rid of sanitary product machines is not an answer.

Let me explain this to everyone. Sometimes your period starts and you were unaware of the fact that its coming. In that cast having access to sanitary products is massively important. Girl have to miss class periods some times because there period started unexpectedly and there are literally no where to get tampons.
The percentage of women at this school is going up, and that means that the sanitary products would be going bad less often.
Having working tampon machines at the busier buildings such as the student center, ctlm, brown, and MZ is immeasurably important. Access to sanitary products…

                        • Actually Use the Emergency Alert

I feel like after the event near Mines Park last night it needs to be addressed. Last night there was an imminent threat, and once again no text about it and not even an email yet at 9am the morning after. This year there has been 2 potential shooters and a package that was viewed as a bomb threat. It'd be nice to actually make use of the system that is supposed to protect us. What's the point of testing the equipment if it is never going to be used. Last year I got a text about an active shooter…

                          • RTD College Passes Should Work During Summer

I attend classes every summer, but the RTD pass we have is not active during this time. This leaves students to pay an extra $300-$400 just for transportation during May, June, July and August if you regularly use the RTD to get to and from school, work, or home.

There should be an option to add the transportation fee during summer, and keep the RTD cards active, or even just keep them active for everyone year round.

People that live in colorado will still make use of them, especially during summer when they will have more time to work between…

                              Hey there!

Yes, unfortunately, the fee collected for the academic year only provides us service to RTD for the academic year. After talking with several students this summer alone, USG will be pursing this matter.

If students who take summer classes still need the RTD service, it would most likely require an extra fee for students taking summer classes. However if the full year service is pursued, we would look into an increase in the overall fee for transportation.

Keep checking back for more updates on the matter, and thanks for reaching out!

                              Love,

                            • Why does Mines require us to take summer field session, but refuse financial assistance?

If we are required by the school to take field sessions during the summer semester, why is it that the financial aid office "recommend you apply for a private education loan to cover your costs for the summer..."?

                              • The intellectual property policy is an unfair to students.

Improvements could be made by removing the "has bearing on a class the student is currently taking" clause, which is ambiguous and would be easy for the school to exploit in nearly every case; adding an exemption to claims on IP developed using any "school resources" for the campus internet, to which all students have alternatives, but the use of which is certainly convenient; and removing the burden of proof from the student as far as school resource use is concerned.

Also, it seems a little silly to claim all IP developed by ALL school employees, RA's and janitors included.

                                • No Common Hour Exams for 300 level and Higher Courses

I propose that 300 level and higher classes should no longer have Common hour exams. I am involved in many organizations on campus and I can't tell you how many times I have had to miss a professional event that would have greatly benefited me and increased our schools reputation just because I had a test scheduled for that night.

I believe that when a student is at the point of taking 300 level classes, they should not only be focusing on schoolwork but also creating a professional life outside of classes. Having multiple common hour exams every other week…

                                  • Computer science field needs to allow students to count an internship for coursework or let them get payed for doing field session

It's ridiculous that it's illegal to not pay an intern for work that a company profits off of and the computer science department has the audacity to have students do work for a company and not only not pay them, but charge them for it and ban companies from paying them. The department recommends to take it during the junior year, when most students would get their best internship. I, and many people I know, have lost internship offers after companies learned that we need to do field session. Mines charges over $3,000 to in state students and over $5,000…

                                    • [SERIOUS] There are too many cum trees on campus

While the title may read as a joke, the cum tree is a real thing. Its scientific name is pyrus calleryana and here's the link to the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrus_calleryana
Googling "cum tree" will also pull up this page.

This tree is called the a cum tree based on the smell that it produces while blooming. It has been described as rotting fish or semen. Unfortunately for us, there are several of these trees all over campus and they all bloom at the same time. This causes our beautiful campus to smell like someone just finished having sex with the…

                                      • Field session should be re-thought

Field session should be reevaluated. It does not truly offer skills for future employers like an internship would. For those that have long field sessions, they cannot have an internship which makes it way harder to be employed at the end of graduation. Employees are also looking for students to start directly after graduation, which often is not possible with field session. Plus, not all families plan for an extra 6 credits during the summer to pay which puts a strain on the family. It is also impossible to have a job and do field session to pay for tuition…

                                        • Why not play Mines Internet Radio instead of the Ordigger Radio?

I've heard a lot of complaints about the new "Ordigger Radio" played it the Rec Center and in Mines Market, and was wondering why they don't play Mines Internet Radio. It seems like a fairly reliable service, is run by a school club, and would give our student DJs more exposure.

I don't know about any of the financial or logistic issues, but it seems silly to have a separate service for music in buildings when a school club could provide the same service, since I'm pretty sure MIR plays music all day, even when they don't have a student…
