Make Campus More Accessible
First off it would be great if buildings had better signage. It can be hard to find elevators and classrooms which can be a hardship for students with mobility problems, especially those of us who experience pain when walking. This is especially a problem in the old buildings that have new additions. It is very hard to find accessible routes to classrooms in various parts of the building.
Second, have functioning elevators in buildings. The elevator in Marquez has been down since around Thanksgiving 2021. There is only 1 elevator in Marquez so students with mobility problems cannot access their classrooms on the upper floor so these classes have to be moved to accommodate the student. One of the elevators in Brown has also been down for about 2 months. Someone else has expressed the same concerns about elevators in other buildings being down for long periods, causing hardships for disabled students.
Third, someone needs to go around and check the automatic doors. Many of them don't work at all or only work sporadically.
Finally, with the rovers being decommissioned there is no way for disabled students to get from class to class easily when they are tired, sore, or there is inclement weather unless they have a car and a permit, even then prime handicap spots are often taken so moving the car isn't really an option. On other campuses they have had shuttles and/or go carts that the disabled students, registered with DSS, can use to get around campus more easily. The students could call a number and request transportation to their next class.
Honestly it just seems like the Mines campus is not built with disabled students in mind. All of this would even help students who are on crutches for a couple weeks or have a temporary disability.

Hey Jamie! Thanks for your beef! This is definitely a huge issue on campus. The seniors and Aidan Lewis have stepped up to address this issue on campus. If you would like to discuss this issue further with them, you can find their emails on our website: usg.mines.edu
