More useful CAD software
The mechanical engineering department only uses Solidworks, when in reality most companies want you to have experience with AutoCAD, Pro-E or Six Sigma. Not sure what their thought process is there...
33 votesThis is a great point.
USG recommends talking to the mechanical department about this issue, since they will provide the change.

"Where my sign at" -David
You know that amazing sign that used to live outside Meyer Hall?...Yeah where's that at tho? Y'know that one that said things like "No grandma it's Mines not MIMES." Excuse me, bring it back, please!

Larger foldaway desks needed in CO209
The current desks in CO209 don't even fit a full sheet of paper on them. And this makes testing in there a nightmare! I will have had 8 tests in CO209 so far this semester as of Oct 31, and many more are to come. I as well as many other people that I have talked with are fed up with testing on desks that are the size of dinner plates. And as a room that hosts a large amount of the tests at Mines, it seems that the desks in 209 should be more adequate for testing purposes
32 votesUPDATE: Contact Laura Medley to get information about classroom committee: lmedley@mines.edu
There is a classroom committee dedicated to providing funds for things like this. We don’t have the contact info for the committee head currently but we will find out who it is! Once we do they should be able to tell you how to apply to replace the desks in Coolbaugh.

No Exams the Night Before E-days
I have a 7:30pm exam on Thursday, April 12 which is the night marking the start of E-days. The exam is for Math454 and there are approximately 50 students in the class. Therefore, I will have to miss Casino night and Mr. Big Digger.
I find it unfair that I will have to skip out on a school-sponsored event due to a scheduled exam. I urge USG to consider working with the registrar to not only move my exam to a different night, but also to disallow exams in the future on the night of E-days.

Study Room Sharing in Brown Building
The study rooms in Brown are quite the hot commodity, but there are currently no rules in place on their usage. Very frequently, one can walk by any of the study rooms and see:
1) A single person in a study room.
2) A whole bunch of items laying around, with no student to be found for hours, even.
There's nothing inherently wrong in the first example, but many students try and get into these rooms during the day because they don't want to sit in the common area. I think a flippable sign on the rooms that reads "Willing…
31 votesUPDATE:
To address your concerns we have:1) Added a flippable sign that says “Willing to Share” and “Don Not Disturb” to allow more students to use the rooms.
2) Added verbiage on the bottom of both sides of the sign that say “Please clean the room before you leave”
If you have any other GREAT ideas please post them on What’s Your Beef.
Love,
USGUSG is currently working on language to put in the Brown study rooms to support this idea. If you have any ideas for verbiage besides what has already been shared put it in the comments below.

Wellness Center bogus
I think the Wellness Center is the only office (entire building) on campus that completely shuts down for lunch 12-1. A lot of students have a break between classes at noon so this is one of the only times we can make it to Wellness Center and the fact they're closed is pretty inconvenient, especially considering the cost we pay for this service. Adding weekend hours would be great but it seems like everything on campus is closed on the weekends so I wouldn't expect that trend to change here.
It's highly recommended that we schedule an appointment in advance…
31 votesThe wellness center is currently improving their website to allow scheduling. Unfortunately, voicemail will not work for the system they currently have. The changes to the software on their website are expected to be available to students before the end of the year.

Increase visibility of commuter students crossing 19th at Elm.
At night/early morning students are not visible to vehicles at the 19th and Elm roundabout. Please install lighting and/or a flashing light to increase the safety for commuter students crossing 19th. Thank you.
31 votesUPDATE:
6 down lights have been installed which should increase visibility and safety at the crossing of 19th and Elm. Furthermore, the city council and school will re-evaluate if the lighting improves the visibility enough when the complete project of Highway 6 and 19th street is finished. This reassessment is scheduled to take place in August and suggestions for additional crosswalks are on the agenda. Any other feedback you have for the current solution is greatly appreciated!Sincerely,

EPICS 151 should be restructured
EPICS 151 is a horrendous class for students taking a full schedule. The professors, at the beginning of the semester, tell the students that they are going to be pretty hands off, allowing students to format their own designs. They then proceed to hand out a ton of busy work, very little of which actually contributed to the final goal of the class. In addition to this, once teams have narrowed down their design ideas, the professor imposes additional, unnecessary parameters, such as the minimum number of subsystems required; these parameters are only put in place so that the professor…

MAC no longer asking for student input (2019)
In light of the recent release of the E-Days theme and the events, it seems like MAC is no longer asking the student body what it wants in terms of these events. E-Days is a hallowed event that brings students together and lets us relax for a single weekend. This event involves concerts that have (in the past) been at least voted on by the students and not even having the chance to put in an opinion makes it seem like MAC knows what is best for the student body. We should be able to decide how we want to…

Library Study Rooms
In the last year, the library study rooms have been booked 5,789 times. This does not include walk-ins. For those reservations, students spend an average of two hours in the rooms each session. Students reserve study rooms to independently study, have job interviews, attend virtual classes and webinars, meet with groups, and even host TA office hours.
Despite playing such an important role for students, the study rooms haven’t been updated in decades. Seeing as the graduate student government, working alongside the library, was able to remodel the study rooms on the third floor a few years ago, I think…

Lights along 19th Heading up to 6th Av.
Any reasonable evaluation of the dangers inherent due to the insufficient lightening and security along the section 19th Street located between the cross-sections of 19th St. and Elm St. and 19th St. and 6th Av. would leave responsible risk management parties to conclude that a liability situation exists and should be fixed as soon as possible. Given that Mines Park Apartments are owned and managed by Colorado School of Mines in that this section of 19th St. is the only pedestrian link between the main campus and Mines Park apartments, it is in the best interest of Colorado School of…
30 votesHi there,
Just wanted to let you know that we brought this lighting issue to Public Safety during the USG sponsored campus safety walk during dead day. Turns out that lighting is planned to go up along with the construction of the 19th Street roundabout/crossing!
Unfortunately, after talking to facilities maintenance, putting up temporary lighting when lighting is already planned for the path up to Mines Park is not a feasible option.
And now we wait for it’s completion!
Love,
USGUPDATE
Hello again!
Currently, there is a lot of construction undergoing in that area so it is decently well lit. If there is still an issue after construction has concluded USG will contact the appropriate party to further address the issue.
Thank you so much for your time and patience!

Periodic Table Themeing
The tables in the Periodic Table should have elements on each table. At minimum a periodic table of elements should be hanging on the wall.

Clean the SRC Gym Floors!
The gym floors are so dirty it doesn't matter if you wear nice gym shoes, you won't get any traction and you'll just have to clean your shoes every time you use the gym. My idea is pretty simple: SRC employees stay for an hour after close (once or twice a week) and sweep and mop the gym floors. The SRC at Mines has the cost of a nice gym, but delivers the quality and service of a shoddy gym at a large middle school. Half of the SRC employees are being paid to watch tv behind the desk, or…
30 votesThank you for your beef Ethan! This has quickly become an important issue among students. I have contacted the recreation center to address the cleanliness and safety issues with the gym. Regarding being overcrowded, administration is taking steps to curve the issue with Spruce and Jackson having gyms. Additionally there are future plans to create more indoor recreation space open to all students.

There’s no free (non-meal swap) food after 8:30 on campus!
As somebody who enjoys a late, post-gym meal sometime around 9ish I’ve been very disappointed by the lack of available food options at night. With the switch to Zime, Mines is limiting students to 3 meals after 8:30 a week. This is unacceptable for us who like to eat late for any number of reasons. Bring back non-meal exchange food at night!

Dead Week?
What ever happened to the idea that we would have a week of nothing but review before our final exams? Dead week has turned into a hell week for the entire school. It is to a point where no one has time to study for their finals because they are too busy trying to finish the papers and lab reports, all due on Dead Day.. Can we at least have one day where things are not due?
29 votesWe discussed this in meeting and have decided not to pursue this topic. Even with one day off assignments would just be pushed to be due a day later or a day earlier, the workload would not decrease. It’s a tough school and we all know that so sometimes we just have to put up with the workload!

More Microwaves on Campus
Currently in order to microwave a meal one must go to either the student center or rec center. This requires all work to be stopped and packed to walk to the student or rec center, which are both lousy study areas. Meals are also only able to be microwaved when those buildings are open. It would be beneficial, to anyone who wants to save money and eat leftovers for lunch, if microwaves were placed in each building, or at the very least busy study buildings such as the CTLM, brown and so on.
28 votesUPDATE:
IT has been accomplished! Both CTLM and Brown now have microwaves. The one in CTLM is by the commons and is useable 24/7. The other is in brown right next to Blaster Brew (the Starbucks) in front of the windows.-USG
USG talked with Sodexo and the heads of different buildings and everyone likes this idea.
More info will go out once this process is further along. Thank you for this idea.

Extended time past just the first day of school to fill out Minor/ASI Form
The registrar currently makes it so that you must have new Minor/ASI forms due 1/10, which is the first day of school. They will not give an extension or anything. If you do not turn your form in on that day (which again, the first day of school), your minor/asi will not be counted. This is ridiculous. I believe this should be changed to be census day. It is difficult to get ahold of your department head, your advisor, and your minor department head all on the same day to sign the form. This is exceptionally ridiculous as students often…

All of my classes are on different websites this semester...
All of my classes are on different website this semester. One is blackboard, one is canvas, and two are on course specific inside mines websites. Last semester I dealt with similar issues as well, including piazza. It is very annoying and inconveinent to have to check 4 different websites every day to check for homework, slides, and updates. I understand that canvas is being rolled out this semester, but it is incredibly annoying to have classes spread over many different websites.
28 votesThis has always been teacher discretion. Teachers use the websites that help them teach best. As for Canvas/Blackboard, next semester there will be no Blackboard and every class will move to Canvas. Canvas also has a feature where you can use other websites such as Piazza within Canvas without leaving the page. Hopefully this will address concerns.
Sincerely

Add Youtube services to mymail accounts
My professor posts youtube videos as a supplement to lecture and encourages us to post discussion in the comments. The youtube service is not allowed through the mymail account system. It would be nice if CCIT would enable this for all students.
27 votesUPDATE:
Due to privacy concerns, mymail accounts can’t be used to login to Youtube.
Thank you for your suggestion!Sincerely,
USGWe emailed the Chief Information Officer and he is looking into it!
